Jun Ashida
(1930 – 2018)
He studied under Junichi Nakahara. In 1980, he became an advisory designer at Takashimaya. In 1983, he founded Jun Ashida Co., Ltd. with his wife Tomoko. From 1966, he served as the exclusive designer for Crown Princess Michiko (now the Empress Emerita) for 10 years. He designed the official uniforms for the Japanese athletes at the 1994 Asian Games (Hiroshima) and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He received numerous awards, including the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, the Medal with Purple Ribbon, an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters of the French Republic, Cavaliere Ufficiale of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, and an Officer of the Order of Merit of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. He passed away in 2018 at the age of 88.
After studying with Junichi Nakahara, he founded Jun Ashida Co., Ltd. in 1963 with his wife Tomoko. In 1960 he was appointed consulting designer for Takashimaya Department Store. For ten years starting in 1966, he was the exclusive designer for Her Imperial Highness the Crown Princess (presently Her Majesty the Empress). Mr. Ashida designed the official uniforms of the Japanese athletic delegations to the 1994 Hiroshima Asian Games and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon (Japan); Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon (Japan); Officer in the Order of Arts and Letters (France); Officer in the Order of Merit (Italy); and Officer in the Order of Merit (Luxembourg). He passed away at the age of 88 in 2018.
